We understand that everyone’s recovery is unique and may progress at a different rate. Our physical therapists will do a full evaluation after your surgery and your individualized program will be tailored to meet your needs. Whether you are a golfer, cyclist, or competitive athlete, your recovery plan will include those activities that are important to you. Equally important are day-to-day activities like cooking, cleaning or a trip to the grocery store. You will have the peace of mind that you are being treated each visit by a licensed physical therapist. Your exercise program won’t be handed off to a tech or aid. The skilled and watchful eye of a licensed therapist will oversee your entire care.
In many cases, the stronger a muscle is before surgery, the faster it will regain its strength after surgery. And if you work to gain range of motion or flexibility in a joint before surgery, it will be easier to achieve after surgery. There are many instances when a surgeon will recommend a few weeks of therapy before surgery. Examples include physical therapy before a knee replacement, before rotator cuff surgery, or before a back surgery. Your therapist will not only teach you exercises to do before surgery, but will focus on specific exercises and activities you can do immediately after surgery. Training the mind & the muscles for what is to come can provide a jumpstart to your post-surgical recovery.
What can I expect during post surgical physical therapy?
While every surgery is different, many recoveries include the following PT treatments.
Passive and active range of motion to get the joint moving again
stretching – performed by the therapist and also included in exercises
strengthening exercises that progress throughout the recovery process
scar massage and mobilizations
modalities (electrical stimulation, ultrasound, ice)
balance and walking instruction
Why do I need physical therapy after surgery?
A physical therapist is a licensed medical provider with an expertise in surgical rehab protocols. Progressing your activity too slow or too fast after surgery can result in damage to the surgical repair or injury to surrounding joints and tissue. Landmark Physical Therapists work closely with area surgeons and follow the latest research protocols for each specific procedure.
How much physical therapy will I need following my surgery?
This depends on the severity of the injury and the type of surgery. Typically patients come to physical therapy 2-3 times per week following a surgical procedure. As your recovery progresses, you may be able to decrease your visits to 1-2 times per week.
